The Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers begin for Comoros and Gambia on Wednesday, with both teams set to clash at Ben M'Hamed El Abdi Stadium in the opening match of Group A.
Comoros are set to embark on their journey toward just their second final in this competition, having first made their debut in 2021, where they left a decent mark by progressing past the group stage before their campaign concluded in the last-16 round. The rise of this national team was evident in the recently concluded COSAFA Cup, where Les Coelacanths achieved their best-ever result with a fourth-place finish after losing the bronze medal battle to Mozambique in a penalty shootout.
Despite not having participated in AFCON before 2021, Gambia are now chasing their third consecutive appearance at the final tournament, but their most recent outing in Ivory Coast in 2023 ended in disappointment as they exited the group stage without earning a single point. The World Cup qualifiers also haven't started well for the Scorpions, who have managed to gather a meager haul of just three points out of 12 available, leaving their spirits low ahead of Wednesday's battle.
Comoros vs Gambia Betting Tips: 1X (Double chance)
Although Gambia boasts more talent in their team, their recent displays have provided scant encouragement, causing us to question their chances of making a successful start in the AFCON qualifiers this midweek. Aside from a 5-1 demolition of the Seychelles minnows earlier in June, the Scorpions have nothing else to show from their previous seven games in all competitions, having ended up on the losing side in the other six. The Comoros opponent has been producing much better results than their midweek rival and seems closer to victory here, especially on their home ground where they have built a three-game unbeaten streak (W2 D1). In the first matchup between the two sides, we expect Les Coelancates to perform better and kick off their AFCON qualifiers positively against Gambia, who have been exceptionally poor away from home lately, losing four visits on the bounce.
Comoros team news
El Fardou Ben, the 35-year-old who joined Zeljeznicar Pancevo this summer, did not make his debut for the Serbian club over the weekend for unspecified reasons, and it's uncertain if he will feature for his country in the AFCON qualifiers.
Nantes forward Adel Mahamoud will also miss the September qualifiers due to an undisclosed injury that has kept him out of all three Ligue 1 matches so far this season.
